WOT Android app

Post by Guest » Wed Mar 04, 2015 4:51 pm

Hello,

I see several threads about WOT applications. That is why, I will present mine. This is an Android app.
The purpose is to catch URLs before they are loaded.
This app is quite simple with only three layouts.
- Main layout: for the WOT queries.
- Settings page
- About page

Purpose:
When a link is clicked, for instance in the mail box, the app catches the link and tests it with the WOT API. If returned values match the user settings, the page is loaded. Otherwise, the app shows the evaluation of the domain on WOT.

To better understand, here is the settings page:
Image
1- Minimum trustworthiness required to load the page (default: good)
2 - Minimum child safety to load the page (default: good)
=> Custom values: Excellent, good, unsatisfactory, poor, very poor, disable.
Image
3 - Block sites with unknown ratings: Yes/No (default: no)
4 - Browser: Pickup the browser which will be used to automatically open the url if it matches the criteria. The app will display all browsers available on the device.

For instance, I tapped on clickable picture received by email:

The app is in French and in English.

Todo:
- Whitelist domains
- More customizable parameters (ie: scam, phishing, etc.)

@Super Hero!
Thank you :-)

The app now detects if the url is shortened. If yes, the url is unshortened before being sent to the WOT API to avoid false green ratings.

Here is a working example from a DM of the Twitter app:

When the shortened link is clicked:

Now, the complete process can be seen here:

If admins allow me to let some people test this app, I will share it.
Of course, this app will be free, with no ads and without trackers. Its only purpose is to protect people on Android devices.

You are free to create and distribute whatever you want, no consent of WOT is required for that.

The only thing you should comply with – if you use WOT's logo then there should be a link to WOT website (the best way is to make the logo clickable) or visible credits should be given (e.g. "Website's reputation is provided by Web Of Trust)".

And you should clearly mention that your software is created by you and WOT has nothing to do with that.

Hello,

@donsorg
Thanks for the answer. I have added a clickable logo on the about page, which redirects to MyWOT.com and I give credit to MyWOT.

@MysteryFCM

Thanks for the proposition, I need :-)

IMHO, the place for download should be: https://play.google.com/store/apps?hl=en

Exactly what are the APP's required permissions?

Will the APP work with the device's [default] Android browser without the need to install / use: Chrome, Firefox, Opera, or other third-party browser?

Matiks, I want to translate your app to Russian! Do you need my little help?

Thanks for the interest.

@c۞g
The only permission required is the Internet access. Because the app uses two APIs:
- unshorten.it
If an url needs to be unshortened (ie: an url from the Twitter app)
- MyWOT

The app automatically detects browsers installed on the device. So, if there is only the default browser, it will work with this one.
I have voluntarily installed several browsers on my device to see if they were detected by the app (capture in this thread).
The idea is to catch the link before it is loaded. If the clicked link is considered safe (depending of user settings) then the work (loading the URL) is delegated to the chosen browser.

@Nick Vini
Thanks! I have a small xml file for translation. I will really appreciate your help.
