A proposal- We need a way of reporting sites for scorecard manipulation.

Post by Apollo702 » Sat Feb 27, 2016 2:16 am

A recent example of the need for this is Studybay.com. They have too many suspicious green reviews to shake a stick at. In cases in which the site owners attempt to use volume to flood us that makes it practically impossible for the community to scour that many of the reviews.

In these cases there should be some sort of mechanism in which trusted members can report the site for review by staff rather than combing through scads of individual reviews.

Perhaps there could be some sort of check or balance on this process to inhibit abuse such as with the MRT- such as a score of 10,000 or something along those lines.

Of course those green ratings haven't had much influence; it is rated 4/100 for trustworthiness and 8/100 for child safety.

Thanks for your suggestion Apollo702.
While WOT's algorithm is very good at detecting manipulation, our compliance staff investigates suspected manipulation as well. That being said, if you come across a site with a score you believe are being successfully manipulated, you're welcome to report it to our support with evidence and it will be investigated.

How and where exactly should one do that? The forum? Somewhere else?

Go to https://www.mywot.com/en/support/feedback/abuse for all abuse related matters except the forum where you use the Flag button.

OK, it is nice to know that link exists. However, on the Support page there is no observable path to it. What good is something that nobody can readily find? The team needs to do something about this.

I usually find it by Googling mywot abuse. It is the first result. Beware of some of the other results as this search term has attracted some of the anti-WOT hate sites.

I am glad that you found it by searching. In terms of website design this is called " mystery meat navigation." In plain English it means that site navigation is messed up.

Does it work with or without human intervention?

Here are a few things I have noticed with comment based scorecard manipulations:
1. The usernames of the accounts are similar. Usually contains two names, separated by a fullstop ( . ), with the first letter of both the names being capitalized.
2. Ratings are posted on days very close to each other. Some people are even stupid enough to do it on the same day.
3. They all have the same typing format. This requires a human to confirm, of course.

And if it is possible, the algorithm should be run every time a scorecard based rating is received, by comparing them with the previous ratings. All of the above is possible to implement, if not already done.

Just a suggestion.

Just a remark ;
One hit ( rating and comment ) by a member with higher level ( silver / gold / platinum ) is enough to make the scorecard manipulation of a whole bunch of rookies useless.
So here the WOT system works good.
But I agree with the proposal that we need a tool against the scorecard manipulation.
