Can anyone recomend a good web host?

Post by Hadashi Blacksky » Thu Sep 11, 2014 10:27 am

I'm currently looking for good cheap web hosting and thought I could do with a second opinion. Would you guys be able to make any recommendations? At the moment I am considering Hostgator, but I'm wondering, does anyone have any good experiences with them or another company?

Requirements (e.g. shared/dedicated, Windows/Linux, software/DB requirements, traffic/bandwidth requirements, max you are willing to spend (important given "cheap" doesn't always == good), do you also need a domain? etc etc) are a major factor in choosing a host, without those, no-one can give reliable recommendations.

Ok, sorry, should have mentioned that. Basically I really just need a good host with regularly updated software (Php and perl support, particularly), the usual MySQL database with a bit of web space, and preferably unlimited bandwidth. The server OS doesn't matter so much as long as it gives good uptime for a medium-sized site with a Mediawiki attached to it (I do have some experience with Chmod so Linux is 0k). If possible I would like to host two sites from the same package. Basically, if it can handle Mediawiki then it should be able to do all the other stuff I want it for. Since I am starting a second site another URL would also be very handy.

I use Dreamhost for my domains, they've been adequate for my needs, easy to get along with, and very responsive should I need support (humans!).

I suggest you read other users comments on their scorecard: https://www.mywot.com/scorecard/dreamhost.com

I'll still recommend Hostgator. Not one day down time in the last two years.

Free or Paid ? I recomanded Endora.cz because big services for free and bigger for paid.
I never see hosting with that many services and space for your web for free and if you paid
services and space for web is great.

If you want cheap service that doesn't require a lot of technical knowledge, I recommend Dreamhost. They have a pretty robust and easy to use management tool.

If you're looking for something more powerful with you in control, I recommend either private servers or VPS through company's like Hostgator or Bluehost (divisions of the same larger company).

Hope that helps.
