Free Wordpress blogs don't allow that.
I had to create a topic with the code to verify mine.

There are plugins that will create an html file for you, as well as an xml sitemap. Just search the wordpress.org plug ins right from your dashboard.

wordpress.org sites have access to plugins, not wordpress.com sites.

Please note that the suggestions from CraftyBadger only apply to wordpress.org sites that are self-hosted, not wordpress.com websites that are hosted on WordPress servers..
I used the HTML verification process:
downloaded and opened the HTML file,
copied the last part of the file name (after the last /),
created a new page using that as the page name in the URL,
copied the code that was in the HTML file and pasted it to my new page,
and saved the new page to my blog with no page name.
This verified my site through WOT.
My new page shows as a blank hot link on my menu bar. You can put the link to your page where you want it.

@ O.P.
My solution :
I've bought an upgrade to Premium for $ 80,-
That gave me a dotcom extension in stead of being a sub on wordpressdotcom.
Additional advantages : - More server space.
- No pop ups and no advertisements in the widgets.
* Note : This is good for the site reputation, when you're - like me - have a site about internet safety and privacy protection.
* You don't wanna be faced with bad ratings for pop ups and other rubbish in this case. Right ?
With the dotcom domain I had no problem verifying my site on WOT.
Just an idea..........

That exactly is the difference.
Note : I'm having sites on both extensions.

Same problem here ( https://nzillatron.wordpress.com/ ).
The WOT-FAQ says "contact support". but when I click that link I only get back to the FAQ. Can't find any way to "contact support" for this. Confusing.

WOT must manually verify a domain hosted on HTTPS
Try this link: General feedback
Note: you must be logged in for the support link to work (same link as in the wiki article)

RE: how to verify a wordpress.com blog?
Thanks weaver.grace, these directions worked to verify my free wordpress.com page without paying more!
<quote user="weaver.grace">
I used the HTML verification process:
downloaded and opened the HTML file,
copied the last part of the file name (after the last /),
created a new page using that as the page name in the URL,

I do not have the page linked in any menu, so unless others guess at the page name, it doesn't hurt to leave it on the site indefinitely.
