Must we title every post?

Post by i☆ » Thu Dec 09, 2010 11:11 pm

When we post a reply to a forum comment, every time we must either
(1) supply a title
(2) the automated system takes the first five words or so and makes it the title.

Couldn't the admins make a title optional, or at least put a more reasonable default? Example: make "Re:" the title if none is supplied. It often seems unnecessary to summarize my posts when they are only a couple of sentences in length anyway.

Please let me know what you think.

Good idea, I personally just put a - when I can't think of what to write.

Sure helps keep the conversation flowing on topic ...

Also, wasn't it recently discussed and *agreed* to use the @ sign when replying to a particular member, especially in deep rooted replies?

I think I might start putting something like @knowurknol instead of just putting no title.

Must we title every post?

I tend to become somewhat lengthy, so in my case a title is always a good idea.

In general, I think titles are useful; both threads and posts...

Remember, a forum thread is read "twice": First when the thread is alive and active.
Thereafter, it is read again and again, countless times. Overview is a lot easier,
as long as the thread still lives. Later it's usually quite hard...

So, I do think that titles makes sense. If I should wish something, I'll suggest that
WOTs auto title algorithm should try to use a complete sentence,
in stead of offering only a fixed number of characters...

The solution we implemented:
 • If you're replying using the quick reply at the bottom of a topic the default subject will be "RE: <topic title>"
 • If you're replying to a comment directly the subject will be "RE: <comment title">. The exception here is that if the comment you're replying to already has "RE:" then it'll just copy the comment's title into your comment.
 • If you enter a comment subject yourself it will use it of course
 • If you enter no subject, it will work as before taking the first x characters
Have fun.

No, but it does save on a lot of confusion. :D
