New WOT competitor ?

Post by Dutch Mountain » Mon Dec 24, 2012 6:33 am

Information @ all :
It appears that Symantec wants their own WOT ( or SA ) look-a-like platform and have created "Norton Safe Web". See the page with info to site owners how to install : http://safeweb.norton.com/help/site_owners
I have already seen a site that was using this, but that was just one.
A compliment to us on WOT, the idea seems to be followed up ( again ) !

BTW I hope the link will adapt the language to your own, mine is Dutch of course.
Anyway : you can switch to your own language in the top bar.

MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR !

"Norton Safe Web" has been around for years. I wouldn't call it a "new WOT competitor". Unlike WOT, reputations are primarily computed through automated means=bot crawling.

I actually joined safeweb before WOT- there is much less of a community aspect to it (thought I once got chewed out by a guy who thought the risqué domain name of the phishing site I was rating made me a pervert), there are no forums and no user awards. The way you rate sites on safeweb is also one-note, there's no categories for ratings. All in all I think it can be useful if you're only interested in avoiding sites with spyware or malware, but WOT rates sites on so many other criteria and has so many more active users that it's really no contest.

Thanks for the info.
Didn't know that and it was the first time I saw it, though I'm quite often analysing sites.

There is quite a few web reputations services out there including Kaspersky, F-Secure and others. One I used to use prior to WOT was 'CallingID' which was included in the original Computer Associates security suite. As pointed out by Figure10 they are mainly focussed on phishing and malware. WOT covers so many other factors that it's leagues ahead imo.

Yes, many reputation systems exist in the security industry,
example would be Webroot's brightcloud.com
Creation Date: 30-dec-1999
however, I'm not satisfied with it's effectiveness, if you're curious try submitting this IP and then this domain name:
46.249.42.161
best-dating2010.info

Norton Safe Web has been mentioned in these forums quite often.
One Google search would be: site:www.mywot.com inurl:forum Norton Safe Web
an alternate query would be using it's abbreviation: NSW
