Russia Arrested Kaspersky Senior Manager On "Treason" Charges

Post by NotBuyingIt » Wed Jan 25, 2017 10:12 pm

A senior Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) intelligence officer was also arrested.

International Business Times reports:
Kaspersky, Russia's biggest cybersecurity firm, confirmed Wednesday its manager in charge of investigating hacking attacks, Ruslan Stoyanov, was arrested in December. Reports published earlier in Russia's Kommersant newspaper also said Stoyanov was arrested along with a senior Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) intelligence officer, and that both faced charges of treason.

The Associate Press adds:
U.S. intelligence agencies have accused Russia of meddling in the U.S. presidential election through hacking, to help Donald Trump win the vote, claims that Russia has rejected. U.S. and EU officials also have accused Russia of hacking other Western institutions and voiced concern that Russia may try to influence this year's elections in Germany, France and the Netherlands. It wasn't immediately clear if the arrests are somehow linked to these allegations.

The way I see it the two stories (this guy getting arrested and the election hacking) may be completely different issues. This guy's arrest could just be routine Russian intelligence service actions.
Many WOT users have an interest in Kaspersky products and services for web safety. Some people suspect governmental retaliation against the firm because it published research linking the government to belligerent, harmful activities, including espionage, involving the internet. The AP report, linked in the original post, claims that those are suspicions are so far only speculation.

Ars Technica has published further reporting of the incident at
https://arstechnica.com/security/2017/01/kaspersky-labs-top-investigator-reportedly-arrested-in-treason-probe/
Whatever the specifics are behind the investigation into Stoyanov, security researchers said the arrest will likely cause colleagues in Russia and elsewhere to self-censor potentially sensitive findings.

"For those living and working under oppressive regimes, keep up the good fight," Jake Williams, founder of security firm Rendition Software who previously worked for the Department of Defense, wrote in a blog post. "But also remember that no incident response report or conference talk is worth jail time (or worse)." In a message to Ars, he added: "I think that these charges will cause security researchers, particularly those in states with oppressive governments, to carefully consider the weight of reporting details of security incidents."

Speculation, which AP calls allegation? The FBI jointly with DHS, and other orgs that investigate such matters, have made specific ties to Russian orgs:

I hope this doesn't influence the quality of Kaspersky antivirus software in a negative way ?
I would worry about back doors being placed within their software but it is very likely that they are under enough scrutiny that this would be noted. Sometimes the balance between state interests and business needs is like a Mexican stand-off.

Seems the Kaspersky website will soon be demoted in grade by SSL Labs:
dev.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=kaspersky.com
The issue is that the server gives 3DES a particularly high preference.
If for nothing else, 3DES should be demoted as it happens to be particularly slow; even with OpenSSL 1.1.0e I get less than 20MB (160MBit) throughput in the benchmark utility.
