Similar sites now available on the scorecard

Post by Timo » Fri Mar 05, 2010 1:23 pm

We decided to test a new feature on scorecard based on this week's poll results. At the end of the scorecard there is now a section which shows similar sites as the domain is, see http://www.mywot.com/scorecard/mywot.com. We get the similar sites feed from http://www.similarsites.com/

At the moment it's not possible to turn it off. Why do you want to turn it off?

No need for it here, pretty useless service imho. But if it would lead to a significant increase of noobs using WOT, it's fine with me.

Why do I want to turn it

Post by Guest » Fri Mar 05, 2010 4:08 pm

Why do I want to turn it off, well because the sites shown on my list bare no relation! How does Jesustrail relate to my site????? If you ARE going to show similar sites DO make sure they are related in content and subject at least.

I would like this feature disabled or at least to turn it off. as I never liked it nor felt it beneficial. This is (imo) is a nothing more than a gimmick.

If I want to see similar sites I can simply google them for more acurate results!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOD I am so angry.

I've just had another look again and must say that I do agree that most of the sites listed often have very little, or nothing at all, to do with the site you're looking at.

E.g., I have visited the scorecard of a (certain =]) lawyer's site, and was forwarded to cooking recipies, online communities, heritage information... but not one other lawyer.

I then went to the scorecard of a random red site other than the lawyer's. Already the first "alternative" I tried had a red rating too!

Now I don't know what the goal of this new feature is, attracting new users, having people better informed, but as far as I have, in all these year, understood your mission it would never ever be WOT's intention to forward people to sites it itself classifies as dangerous, would it? (On the main page, such links are marked with a red circle. Here, they're not marked at all. This will confuse unexperienced members, and certainly not throw a good light on Wot to new users, especcially since WOT is operating a Safe Search tool in search engines, and then redirects to rogue sites on its own website as "alternatives" to green ones without even informing before the link is clicked).

Just imagine that many school kids are protected by a governmental blocking service or a school proxy. Many who know about its existence will also have WOT installed. They could now use this new feature to find other bad sites if they want to access something they are not allowed to see, blocked by the proxy. That could be... pornography? What we are trying to do here is exactly the opposite, isn't it?

So as a conclusion, I must admit that I'm not too sure whether this new feature is in fact as useful as it seems on first sight...
