What alternatives to Google can you suggest?

Post by odeshevych@gmail.com » Tue Oct 03, 2017 5:56 pm

Many people suggest Qwant, saying it's it's accurate and since people complain about privacy in several threads, maybe people find this a good alternative. They claim privacy is a priority to them. But so far this search engine gave me less than optimal search results. Maybe you have some suggestions? I would be glad to hear your input.

I've mostly just been continuing with Google.

Duckduckgo seems to be pretty good on the privacy front.

Bing, that's Microsoft. Is that better than Google? I'm not sure.

Yandex is a Russian company. Different issues than Google. If possible Russian government entanglements are a concern to you ... maybe not.

On all these, the big question is, what is your concern about how your browsing history might be abused? I buy a USB charger on Amazon, then ads for USB chargers start appearing on my Facebook, and in the Google advertising sidebar. Creepy, for sure, but I'm not convinced it's a huge issue. For me, at least.

Other alternatives :
Startpage - hxxps://classic.startpage.com
Ixquick - hxxps://www.ixquick.com
* Note : These two are "privacy friendly" and use ( more or less ) the Google system and / ot algorithm.

Surf canyon - hxxp://www.surfcanyon.com
A completely different search engine, digging deeper in websites and giving totally different results.
Same goes for Duck Duck Go, also different results that the Google related SE's.

qwant is powered by bing (just like yahoo) for web, image & video search...
duckduckgo is powered by yahoo (which is powered by bing) for web, image & video search...
yandex is obviously not powerful enough coz their webcrawler rarely even crawl chinese/japanese/korean etc language sites, so their web search is like 3rd world countries & their image/video search is like 9th world countries compare to google/bing which is 1st world...
only baidu/so/sogou even come close but they r chinese, so u may need web translator & btw, they censor porn...

check here for list of search engines...

In the past we've had several discussions here about Baidu.com. It' s Chinese, censored and manipulated results.
Not trusted by Quterra and Scumware.org : hxxps://www.scumware.org/search.scumware

More info : hxxps://www.marketingtochina.com/20-reasons-hate-baidu

The scorecard of Baidu seems manipulated to me as well, so many conflicting comments..... Weird !

Re: Baidu.com – if it is from inside the PRC, it can not be completely trusted since the government has made little secret about being into and manipulating all social media and ISPs.

I recently noticed searchnet.ml, which was up for review.
It is quick and I liked how the results looked without the heavy site bias that google has a serious problem with.
I also noticed how after I rated this search engine, it has been severely downgraded by someone (?) with no comment whatsoever.
Talk about rating manipulation!

RE: What alternatives to Google can you suggest? - SEARCHNET ???

A - One can be quick if you don,t find everything. I've made a comparison what Google finds in my profession ( plant breeding ) and what searchnet finds. That one has very limited results and doesn't even comes near to Google in both search results and images results.

B - To me the site seems still under construction. The pages "Features" and "About" have no content and "Popular terms" only a few key words, probably placed by the web designer

You have 3 disagrees on your comment and I think I’ll join.
That’s perhaps no manipulation but opinion
This searchnet is not very effective as a search engine.

Note BTW : Checked with URLVoid and Virus Total. No Threaths found - CLEAN

BTW 2 : The registrant of the URL is Dutch and I don't understand why they use the country extension ML in stead of ( Dutch ) NL

RATED and commented

Sure, that's fine, however I question why the site should get down voted if people don't believe it to be as effective as Google. I don't think that is the intent of a WOT rating.
I am beginning to detest Google's deliberate insertion of certain companies at almost every other search that I perform on their platform.
I have to use a rather long custom script as it is to filter out these promoted sites that have little to do with my search.

I did find that searchnet did mostly omit these heavily promoted sites on Google.

Agreed !

the intent of a WOT rating.
In general it's common habit that we don,t rate sites which are still under construction.
But this site in the opening page reports 2016 - 2017 and now it's almost 2018.
IMO then a site isn't "under construction" anymore but for a long time unfinished.
And that means incomplete. No PP, ToS, contact info. Just to mention some.
Hence my yellow rating
