What do i give up for using the WoT?

Post by 234g52345234g52345 » Sat Mar 19, 2016 9:50 pm

Hi there. As you can tell by the pseudo random/garbage username, I'm interested in privacy, anonymity, and security online.

I came across an article in a linux magazine saying that one tool to use in the toolkit to improve your privacy, anonymity, and security online is the Web of Trust plugin. I was taken aback, since the last I looked into this plugin/addon, I decided it was garbage and should not be used nor recommended, though I could not remember why<ii>. I decided to check myself before I wrecked myself, and I did not come to the same conclusion again. In fact, I did not come to any conclusion, which is rather puzzling.

I saw that the 2011 lawsuit in Florida was dismissed with prejudice (meaning it's final), and the author has replied to some complaints on ripoff report. These are positive things for building a reputation.

I haven't come across a technical explanation of how WoT works, but I can gather it works 1 of 2 ways:
1. Sends current URL and/or potential URLs to "the mothership" for processing and then returns information.
2. Stores data locally and consults all URLs when prompted to display WoT info to the user.

1 is a privacy and anonymity violation, while 2 is not. Are there articles or white papers explaining how WoT works? Is WoT Open Source and/or FOSS? Where can I read up on the "nuts and bolts" of WoT?

You can view the source code for most of the WOT plugins at https://github.com/mywot [trusted site, official WOT GitHub]
The source code for the IE plugin is not currently on GitHub but is available at the WOT Wiki page at https://www.mywot.com/wiki/Internet_Explorer

FYI : I,m member since summer 2009 and still active.
Back then about 8 million were member and now it's somewhere around 150 million.
If it was garbage I would have been long gone.

When used correctly it can be one of many tools to enhance your privacy/security. No one single tool can do it all. When used in combination correctly and with responsible user behavior one can vastly improve one's privacy/security.

myWOT.com is great as a "site review" and community forum page, it provides information on sites which engage in shady activity that others mark OK.

For example:

I never recommend people WOT as a browser addon. Unlike Mozilla/Google Safebrowsing, the addon does not download an existing blacklist and go by that. This also makes me uncomfortable privacy-wise.

Regarding privacy concerns let's hope they stay on top of WordPress updates (for their fancy new blog) for our sakes, and hope they get around to find ally updating their MediaWiki as per the thread at https://www.mywot.com/en/forum/64922-wot-wiki-used-outdated-mediawiki I started. (disclosure: I operate two instances of MediaWiki myself on two low-traffic domains)
