CNET is no longer a credible site

Post by Teri.Nabeack » Mon Mar 17, 2014 10:17 pm

CNET was once a site where you could download software with relative security. It is no longer the case as I downloaded FreeKeyloggerPro and it was infested with malware. Additionally, when I googled wajam removal/uninstall it provided a link to the wajam site - which is a virus infected scummy place. I think WOT should read the reviews on here about CNET and downgrade their security from green to red. I think it impacts WOT's credibility that there are posts that identify CNET as malware infested and yet they give it the green light.

WOT administrators you need to take notice of these posts and act on them!

Teri.Nabeack,

WOT doesn't meddle with sites' reputation as those are submitted by users of WOT. The best thing you can do is submit your own rating and comment on the site scorecard. You may also encourage others to do the same.

Regarding FreeKeyloggerPro: https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/a3d42a0b5555dd637a275fa6250f0ea86ab0cc4770353ba1ddb8fad8239c8a7b/analysis/1395095282/

CNET's own downloader is riddled with malware. It's a form of advertisement that I don't think they are managing. Kind of like Yahoo's advertisement banners. To avoid most of that, I don't use CNET's downloader. There is usually a link under the download button that lets you download directly from the author's web site. I think some author's must pay CNET for them not to use their downloader and to provide a link to download the software directly without the extra link under the button. One example is AVG Free. You can click that button and get the actual AVG download manager which has it's own advertisements.

You downloaded FreeKeyloggerPro and expected it not to be detected as a virus/malware?

I doubt this is anything to do with CNET, althoug I agree they have some bad practices.

Please visit this additional thread in the General Section, "Why I Hate Download-CNet." We talk about the problems with the site, and expand on all the issues discussed here. The download section of Cnet is the specific horror part of the site that is loaded with malware. We are encouraging everyone to rate the site down from its currently ridiculous, excellent WOT rating.

I say this because I don't think the website is being maintained as well as it was in the past, based on the sharp drop activity in the forums. There used to be CNET staff who would answer questions about software and much more. It is sad, because CNET is a great resource.

There are some parts of CNET that are still good, without malware. I would not rate CNET down unless I personally had a bad experience with the downloader. Anyone who has should certainly rate accordingly, e.g. poor customer experience, unwanted programs. It isn't right to change your rating if you haven't experienced it, say, if you only use CNET for reading and commenting on their news articles.

I've just updated my comment on the scorecard for more clarity, so the thumbs up/down are erased. Please read and rate my review:
