Disney and Coca Cola 'keeping an eye' on Wicked Campers

Post by hotdoge3 » Tue Mar 29, 2016 10:00 am

Coca-Cola and Disney have both said they are keeping an eye on Wicked Campers' use of their branding and characters on vans to make crude jokes alluding to drug use.

One campervan features an image of Snow White smoking drugs with the slogan "Crack, Enjoy," a play on Coke's branding message.

Wicked Campers has faced increasing backlash in recent weeks as police, government ministers, the Department of Conservation, campgrounds and the public object to offensive slogans painted on the sides of the company's campervans.

Associate Tourism minister Paula Bennett is one of three ministers trying to figure out how to get the troubling sexist advertisements on the Wicked Campers off the road.

Coca-Cola and Disney are all about the money. It is only the money that stirs ministers and not ethics or morality.

Any holder of a brand name is going to want to protect it.

In gact, in the US isn't it required for trademark holders to protect their trademarks or face the risk of losing them?

Yes. Unfortunately not for copyright or patent though.

Yes, because we really need to wipe people we disagree with off the map. Terrible.

This is where things get tricky. A perfect test case was one that helped the U.S. win the second world war: WD40. It is a small family owned company and they never filed for the rights- so they can't lose them.

I second that thought. I understand the need to protect copyrighted material but not the need for censorship.

This is a case of WD-40 never filed for a patent so their formula could continue to be protected as a trade secret.

Queenstown's council is about to unleash hell on Wicked Campers.

Hefty $300 fines will now be issued to the company when their vehicles displaying offensive slogans are seen in Queenstown.

The council initially gave Wicked the opportunity to comply with its district plan - which bans sexually explicit, indecent or offensive signs.

But Wicked doesn't see the problem, the council says, despite its infamous track record.

Council regulatory boss Lee Webster says: "We disagree so when we have evidence of a sign-written camper that we believe is sexually explicit, lewd or otherwise offensive, we will issue a $300 infringement.
