Frustration

Post by Michael.Gustavson » Thu Mar 22, 2018 5:39 pm

I look at a website like "HomeAdvisor.com" and I know that it's a total scam, because they contact me all the time, and I am in the industry. Many people have commented on this via WOT. However, it still somehow has a 4.3 rating which means most people are going to think that this is a "good" website, when it's actually all a big fat lie, and the WOT users know it and say it on the WOT rating page, but it doesn't transfer to the rating results. It seems to me that the whole point of WOT is to help people, when actually what is happening in this situation with Home Advisor is that WOT is doing the opposite of helping. It's actually in effect PROMOTING an unethical business by giving it a big green 4.3! I think WOT should start weighing people's stars more who make comments because the people who make comments care enough to take the time to write, because they know what's going on, and want others in the community to know the truth. The people who click 5 stars just because it's not a porn site don't know what's going on. The people who write comments are people who care, and the opinion of people who care is exactly what WOT should be valuing. If you don't value the stars of people who care enough to write comments, then people will stop writing comments and stop using WOT. The fact that HomeAdvisor has a 4.3 shows me that WOT is not doing what I thought it was doing. I'm not sure I can really take WOT seriously anymore after noticing this. In short, I think commenter stars should be weighted more heavily. We are a community of concerned citizens, after all, are we not? Let's take the thoughts of our most dedicated community members more seriously. It seems like that is what WOT should be all about. Businesses can manipulate with SEO. But that can't manipulate people's honest opinions written in prose.

Most of the comments on this scorecard are old, so their ratings will have faded over time and have little impact on the current rating, please read the FAQs.
because the people who make comments care enough to take the time to write
There are many reasons people may not leave a comment on a scorecard - including fear for their privacy & safety. Members who leave green ratings often don't comment as they feel it's not necessary, whereas members leaving lower ratings may feel they need to comment so others know what the problem is. Your assumption is unfair.
Forcing members to leave comments or giving less weight to ratings without comments would also make members less inclined to rate. Less members rating would lower the effectiveness of Wot.
We are a community of concerned citizens, after all, are we not? Let's take the thoughts of our most dedicated community members more seriously.
Our most dedicated members are regularly on this forum discussing how Wot works & any issues it may have, and this has been discussed before.
If you want to have an impact on ratings, you need to rate more than 5 websites to earn trust from the system.
