PDFCreator ( www.pdfforge.org/ ) is causing havoc with toolbar install

Post by Steven Avery » Fri May 01, 2009 8:21 am

Hi Folks,

PDFCreator, formerly a respected open source product, is causing havoc with a malware install toolbar. Amazingly SourceForge hasn't done anything about this yet and still lists the software, and for many their trust level is shaken as well.

Here are threads, five on the Pdfforge site, two on SourceForge and then some blogs and malware discussions. Likely there is more, I did simple searches and I will not summarize, please simply read. There are a lot of issues covered in the references below. Most are from the last two months, apparently a long-standing problem became far more aggressive.

Thank you for the heads up Steve.

I use that program, have done so for years; it saves so much paper spooling my print jobs directly to a PDF file.

Admittedly, I still use PDFCreator 0.9.6 released (2008-09-19)
I was surprised to see that the SF project page/downloads no longer retains older versions, just the current 0.9.8 is available. Fortunately, download.com still has a copy, if reverting is desired: PDFCreator-0_9_6_setup.exe (15.3MB)

Annoyingly ........

Post by MysteryFCM » Fri May 01, 2009 11:46 pm

.... I've been a fan of PDFCreator, and recommended it at every opportunity I could, until a few months ago, when the time came that I was testing IE8 beta, and it required I update it. I was extremely disappointed to learn that they were force installing this crap, and have since stopped recommending it.

Still trying to find an open source alternative.

I have FF [current] and IE8 [current]
I do not experience any problem with it installed as a printer and select File -> Print from either browser. (ver: 0.9.6)

you might have a clean install .. however ...

Hi Folks,

Just to be clear, you may be able to get a clean install even of 0.9.8 -- although apparently that was impossible on some network silent installs. Thus if you get a clean install, no toolbars, no crap. no reset, .. everything properly unticked, you probably will have no difficulties. Personally I will not bother trying (other than as an installer test) as I will not use software that is too heavily crapware-involved.

In the threads above you will see that the problems have been many (as in the similar situation recently with Comodo's CIS crapware that ended up with a Softpedia brouhaha, still in process).

And simply the idea of a crapware opt-out (default must be changed during installation) on an open source program is wrong. Open source programs are supposed to be known for integrity, forthrightness and not leading folks astray through manipulation and trickery. (These crapware installers are based on the fact that folks trust the installers and do not untick, especially when opt-out.) So I wonder why SourceForge is slow to act, as this has given them a bad name. People used to see SourceForge as close to 100% reliable, like you might see "Nonags". Only with lots of open source hefty software. Now you have to be concerned that they do not monitor crapware foisted through the open source projects, continuing to keep the SourceForge name involved even as the months go by. Hopefully it has only been a short somnabulistic oversight, but as of tonight not only is PDF Creator listed, there is little note of the problem. Oh .. it is accompanied with a strange google ad on the side, but that is a whole nother story.

Apparently no open source alternative yet, although talk about forking the code to a new implementation in response to the PDFCreator attempted cash-in. Lots of reasonable alternatives, I have used PDFFactory, CutePDF is often mentioned, PDF995, Bullzip, DoPDF, PDF Redirect, PrimoPDF, TinyPDF, StickyPDF and PDF24 are others for consideration, I think they all have freeware versions. Giveawayoftheday had a NovaPDF lite the other day, which is what led to checking these up some. However that is not a freeware product normally.
