Please Rate Down Conduit.com!

Post by Satchman » Tue Jun 03, 2014 1:44 pm

Dear WOT,

They are a known distributor of adware and browser exploits. Unwanted toolbars and redirects are common at this site, but it has an Excellent WOT rating?

See WOT Scorecard:

I removed the Malware reason from my WOT rating. However, there are Potentially Unwanted Programs and toolbars, so probably more realistic to rate it as a PUP than full blown viruses or malware. I still rated the Trustworthiness element poor and want to keep that rating. Even if you choose to install something that my change your homepage and install unwanted software, that in of itself is not a trustworthy website.

For the above reasons, I don't think a Red Rating is unrealistic for Conduit.com.

Regards,

Satch

Huge debate over at the Microsoft forum about Conduit:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/prot ... a0a?page=1

It is claimed by MS supporters that because you have to physically install Conduit that this makes it non-malicious, and classifies it as a PUP, not a virus or malware. It is also claimed that toolbar venders are putting OTHER malware on the Conduit servers, making Conduit itself not malware, but the crap that other developers are adding to the Conduit servers.

Having said that, three things come to mind:

1.) Conduit should be monitoring their servers better so that people don't have to worry about other software toolbars infecting the site, and right now this is a serious problem.

2.) WOT users who don't want to have the risk of people visiting the site, which is prone to being abused, I think should still mark conduit Red for their own protection. At the very least, there are PUPS there that people don't want.

3.) It seems that if you don't want to take a chance on the Conduit search toolbar messing up your homepage or exploiting your browser, you should not visit conduit.con.

Anything else that users can do to protect their computer from the issues associated with the "other PUPS" at Conduit's site?

Below is what you may have to go through if you are foolish enough to visit Conduit.com: (It shows how to remove Conduit Search and the Adware from your computer:)

http://malwaretips.com/blogs/conduit-search-removal/

Everyone should rate the site RED (Don't Trust.) because of the browser exploits and adware which Conduit.com contains. Rate Conduit.com RED for Untrustworthy, so that people will get the warning screen at that site.

Been monitoring Conduit for years and whilst certainly adware amongst other things, I've never seen them involved in browser exploits.

Any chance you can provide evidence/intel on this please?

Agreed. There is nothing wrong with Conduit other than it is a toolbar. At first (10 years ago?) Conduit was spyware and it was immediately black listed by every security vendor. It took Conduit about 6 months before they saw the light and cleaned up the software. Since then they have been de-listed as malware and considered safe.

I like to complain about toolbars just as much as the next guy-gal. That doesn't mean they are all dangerous or are not useful. Take a close look at all of your Firefox add-ons. Some are toolbars only they are compacted into a little button. A little button but still be a toolbar.
