Medical disinformation and the unviable nature of COVID-19 conspiracy theories

Post by A440 » Sat Mar 06, 2021 9:57 am

This article addresses the issue of online "fake news" and how disinformation can covertly modify the behavior of individuals and how this causes harm to the society at large.

The coronavirus pandemic has seen a marked rise in medical disinformation across social media. A variety of claims have garnered considerable traction, including the assertion that COVID is a hoax or deliberately manufactured, that 5G frequency radiation causes coronavirus, and that the pandemic is a ruse by big pharmaceutical companies to profiteer off a vaccine. An estimated 30% of some populations subscribe some form of COVID medico-scientific conspiracy narratives, with detrimental impacts for themselves and others. Consequently, exposing the lack of veracity of these claims is of considerable importance.

This is why WOT should move more towards identifying and addressing sites that engage in this sort of activity. Where in the past one might be concerned with sites that harbor malware and exploits, nowadays the real malware is that disinformation which promotes discord within society, regardless of the country. This is the real dangerous exploit that should be addressed.

Had to bring that to my aunt's attention as she apparently bought into the hoax hook, line and sinker, thinking it was trustworthy as she claimed that a doctor shared said BS to her. Just because a doctor shared it doesn't automatically make it an infallible gospel.
This is why, in this day and age, I believe WOT's mission should include sites which, though may not host software exploits, does host exploits of the mind and body, which could cause a great deal more harm in the physical world of hard, shiny objects.
It's a form of social engineering so I guess they should count as red.

Epoch Media Group — a news organization dedicated to conspiracy theories and political misinformation

Post by A440 » Sun Mar 21, 2021 9:43 am

I've known that this organization is rabidly anti-CCP (Chinese Communist Party), which does not bother me too much seeing how lacking in ethics and morality the CCP is, however, the Epoch Media Group has assumed the worst vices of its erstwhile allies as being politically useful, thus they now mix political disinformation into their news feeds and promote conspiracy as well as pseudoscience. Falun Gong extensions have also been active in promoting the European alt-right. See: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/09/technology/epoch-media-right-wing-disinformation.html

The Epoch Media Group is a product of the Falun Gong Movement that was banned in the PRC (China) and is religious based. Their creed is "Truthfulness, Compassion, Tolerance", yet they now spread disinformation and are completely intolerant of anyone who criticizes them, or their esteemed leader, Li Hongzhi and recruit members in the same way evangelical groups do, which is focused upon group think:
Falun Gong melds traditional Taoist principles with occasionally bizarre pronouncements from its Chinese-born founder and leader, Li Hongzhi. Among other pronouncements, Li has claimed that aliens started invading human minds in the beginning of the 20th century, leading to mass corruption and the invention of computers. He has also denounced feminism and homosexuality and claimed he can walk through walls and levitate. But the central tenet of the group's wide-ranging belief system is its fierce opposition to communism.

On Sagebook, a Twitter-like social network filled with posts from right-leaning users, a sidebar of trending topics contained the hashtags for “Stop the Steal,” “Censorship” and “Facebook.”
Right on Times, an obscure right-wing news aggregator, recently promoted favorable articles about Republican officials who refused to recognize Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s victory in the 2020 election.
All three are among about a dozen websites spreading misleading information with ties to the Epoch Media Group, a news organization that has become a top purveyor of conspiracy theories and political misinformation, according to data provided by the research group Advance Democracy and analyzed by Global Disinformation Index, a nonprofit that studies disinformation.

Finally, the above referenced NBC News report states “In addition to claims that alien abductions are real and the drug epidemic was engineered by the “deep state,” the channel pushes the QAnon conspiracy theory, which falsely posits that the same “Spygate” cabal is a front for a global pedophile ring being taken down by Trump.”

Abovetopsecret.com — Above Credibility As Well

Post by A440 » Tue Mar 30, 2021 6:08 am

This site is an absolute nexus of conspiracy theories and pseudoscience, yet enjoys a remarkably high rating in WOT — higher than other legitimate news sites which are fact based. Their comment sections act as amplifiers for disinformation and rumour.

abovetopsecret.com
Founded in 1997, Above Top Secret is a news and discussion board that promotes conspiracy theories and pseudoscience. The website lacks transparency as they do not disclose owners. . . Topics include UFOs, 9/11 conspiracies, Chemtrails, pretty much anything you can imagine that relates to a sinister Government. During the Covid-19 pandemic, they promoted conspiracy theories such as this Timing of New Super Duper Mutant Covid Strain as well as election fraud misinformation such as this Joe Biden Spilled the Beans on Democrats 2020 Election Fraud and Cheating Plans, which relies on unreliable sources such as Just The News and the Epoch Times.

This site has failed multiple fact checks:

The Obama administration has ordered $1 billion worth of ‘disposable coffins’ for use with ‘FEMA camps.’ – False
Biden Admin Urges Supreme Court Let Cops Enter Homes Seize Guns Without Warrant. – False
President Obama has signed an executive order banning the Pledge of Allegiance in all public schools. – False

ussanews.com — Tea Party Disinformation Redux

Post by A440 » Tue Apr 06, 2021 9:13 am

This site promotes extreme political disinformation, conspiracy theory, psuedoscience, you name it, they've fronting for it.

ussanews.com
USSA News is a news and opinion website established in 2010 in response to the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA-Obamacare). The tagline for this website is “The Tea Party’s Front Page”, which indicates a right-wing/pseudo-libertarian position. . . the about page contains an entirely false, so-called fact that reads “Illegal aliens have more rights than most citizens.” This is false. Further, this site does not list any names associated with it.
See: https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/ussa-news/

This site also makes the Columbia Journalism Review's index of fake news, click-bait and hate sites as being "unreliable".
See: https://www.cjr.org/fake-beta
See: https://decodingdisinformation.com/2020/07/19/what-are-some-fake-news-sites/

Their editorial bias is clearly over the top in rhetoric and often uses Cold War and Evangelical descriptions, for example:
‘Angel families’ who had kids murdered by illegal imigrants
Satan Soldier Bill Gates Warns About a Plandemic
Every Single Day, Christians Are Being Tortured, Beaten & Killed All Over The Globe – Where Is The Outrage?
CDMedia CoFounder And Former Delta Pilot Talks On War Room About Boycotting Corporate Communists
This site acts as an amplifier for conspiracy theory (Qanon) COVID disinformation and hides this behind a registered user disscussion section of the site. Topics covered are:
The Election was Stolen. Trump won!
How do we combat and beat Democrats now that they've cheated?
WINTERIZE OUR “wind turbines “ REMOVE THEM
Keeping Score? How are the Communists doing?
Vote Trump, Save Humanity
Is Kamala Harris Eligible to be Vice President?
Is Covid-19 just the common flu with a scary new name?

Which yields commentary such as:
Good thing I have my guns, ammo, and food! Dammed politicians
To me the only important number is the total deaths in the US in 2020 (COVID). So far it looks like a normal year and we've been scammed.
Check out this video when you have an hour. It's about the scamdemic...
No mask for me either, law be Damned
Breathing in your own breath all day is bad for you. More will suffer illnesses having a mask on all day.
You're convinced Biden won a fair election! Who is the idiot now? The proof to the contrary is endless.
This site has failed fact checks:
“human cages” found in Caruthers, California are being used to hold human trafficking victims captive. – False
Becton had “openly admitted that she’s going to look the other way at looting in her jurisdiction as long as the people involved can prove they needed the Louis Vuitton purse and weren’t stealing it for personal gain.” – False
The deaths of John Beilman and his daughter were linked to the Las Vegas mass shooting via a device found in Stephen Paddock’s hotel room. – False

churchmilitant.com – Fake News Under a Religious Mantle

Post by A440 » Sun Apr 11, 2021 1:22 pm

This site operates under the guise of being a legitimate Catholic news site when in reality it is a radical lay person news and opinion website with an extreme right wing bias in reporting.
The site was known as Real Catholic TV until 2012, when the Archdiocese of Detroit notified the owner and Real Catholic TV that “it does not regard them as being authorized to use the word ‘Catholic’ to identify or promote their public activities.”

churchmilitant.com
This site exemplifies "extreme bias, consistent promotion of propaganda/conspiracies, poor or no sourcing to credible information, a complete lack of transparency and/or is fake news."

the Church Militant was officially declared a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, as well as the reputable Christian Science Monitor. In response to the Christian Science Monitor the Church Militant proclaims them as a fake news source.
See: https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/church-militant/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_Militant_(website)

One example of their POV:
In June 2020, Church Militant faced backlash after it released a video in which Voris repeatedly accused Washington Archbishop Wilton Gregory of being a "accused homosexual," "Marxist" and an "African Queen". Church Militant released the video after Archbishop Gregory had criticized American president Donald Trump for clearing protestors so that he could have a photo op in front of a church. Gregory then called it "baffling and reprehensible" that Trump should visit the shrine of Pope John Paul II, which Trump did on the occasion of signing an international order to advance religious freedom. Catholic scholar Anthea Butler and Jesuit James Martin called Church Militant racist and homophobic, and a few days later, Detroit Archbishop Allen Vigneron publicly condemned the video; the archdiocese issued a disclaimer distancing itself from Church Militant.
This site additionally supports the claims that the election of 2020 was rigged, which is false. See: www.churchmilitant.com/news/article/the-activist-media

This site also promotes pseudoscience and medical disinformation regarding the COVID virus:
Vaccine Is Trojan for Totalitarian Takeover
Pro-Lifers Parody State’s COVID Psycho-War
Mass Vaccination Will Beget ‘Wild Monster’
UK Uses Psycho-Warfare to Fan COVID Terror
Pope Triggers ‘Coronavirus Nuclear Reactor’
Most of which were written by Dr. Jules Gomes, a vicar in the Church of England before being banned from the ministry in 2016 following a disciplinary hearing into his conduct.
See: www.thesun.co.uk/news/2153017/potty-mouthed-vicar-facing-axe-over-x-rated-rants-to-colleagues-accuses-church-of-england-of-using-sharia-law-to-discipline-him/

You get the idea of what kind of principles this site promotes.

Re: greatreject.org — A Nexus of Conspiracy & Political Disinformation

Post by A440 » Tue Apr 13, 2021 5:52 am

This site is an anonymously run far-right conspiracy and pseudoscience website. The website completely lacks transparency as it does not have an about page or disclose authors, editors, and owners. The domain is registered in the Netherlands.

greatreject.org
GreatReject does not produce original news reporting but rather republishes or links to other articles from other sources. Story selection appeals to the far-right and those who reject the consensus of science. For example, they promote human-influenced climate change denialism such as this NASA admits climate change is natural and caused by the sun., however, at the time of this review, the main topic is Covid-19 misinformation and falsehoods. GreatReject promotes the belief that Covid-19 is not real, as evidenced by this story Official Covid death numbers: the fraud and the killing. During the USA Presidential Election, they often promoted election fraud conspiracies such as this which links to a Bitchute video: Lin Wood: “I believe the military is in control,” “Joe Biden is a fake president.
See: https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/greatreject/

Instead of running a news organization, greatreject simply collects falsehoods from all over:
When it comes to sourcing, they normally rely on misinformation websites such as America’s Frontline Doctors, LewRockwell.com, and RT.com. Further on the right-hand sidebar, they offer links to video channels that read like a who’s who list of conspiracy theorists. Links include Infowars, Corbett Report, Right Side Broadcasting, and OAN. In general, GreatReject promotes far-right biased conspiracy and pseudoscience that is not credible on any level.
Failed fact checks include such whoppers as Government of Norway indicted for crimes against humanity.

OANN.com — Addendum 02

Post by A440 » Mon Apr 19, 2021 7:41 am

A recent OAN segment said there were “serious doubts about who’s actually president,” and another blamed “anti-Trump extremists” for the Capitol attack.
See: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/18/business/media/oan-trump.html
For reference to past addendum: https://forum.mywot.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=71902&p=275687&hilit=oann.com#p275687
For referenced article: https://www.oann.com/growing-number-of-state-governments-questioning-election-results-pushing-for-hand-recounts/

From the NYTimes article:
In interviews with 18 current and former OAN newsroom employees, 16 said the channel had broadcast reports that they considered misleading, inaccurate or untrue. . . OAN has also promoted the debunked theory that the rioters who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 were left-wing agitators . . . “History will show it was the Democrats, and not the Republicans, who called for this violence.”.
OANN actively suppresses journalistic standards of excellence:
Allysia Britton, a news producer, said she was one of more than a dozen employees who had left OAN in the wake of the Capitol riot. She criticized some of what the channel had reported, saying it was not up to journalistic standards.
“Many people have raised concerns,” Ms. Britton said in an interview. “And the thing is, when people speak up about anything, you will get in trouble.”

I liked to use WOT, somehow I felt safe from viruses, phishing and other dirties. But now I see that it's took over by communists. I know what communism is because I lived in communist country and I can recognize one when I see it. Others can't have their opinion and they can't speek freely, the right is only what communists say it's right. Probably they should like to see us dead.
So WOT, you lose all credibility. Your screaming red sign doesn't mean a thing anymore.

Americanthinker.com – Addendum 02

Post by A440 » Thu Apr 22, 2021 3:21 pm

Thomas Lifson of the Americanthinker.com blog falsely claims COVID vaccinations are "experimental" and falsely implies that " the state can impose medical procedures on its citizenry as a duty" which it clearly can not.

"Biden announces it's your 'patriotic duty' to get jabbed with the experimental COVID vaccine"
This COVID disinformation article links to a mewe forum, which require forum registration to view.
The COVID vaccine is not "experimental" and has been tested. No clinial trials stages were skipped.
See: https://www.reuters.com/article/factcheck-covid-vaccines-idUSL1N2M70MW

See this warning about the deliberate use of term “experimental” to sow vaccine hesitancy:
https://publichealthcollaborative.org/misinformation-alert/anti-mask-non-peer-reviewed-article-widely-circulated-2/

The entire Americanthinker Mewe forum is devoted to issues such as:
We are fast becoming some kind of vast sanctuary nation for lawbreakers. (in reference to the Floyd George trial)
with commentary such as: Blacks WILL BE Black. It is encoded in their genome. Promiscuity, antisocial behaviors, poor impulse control, "r" type parenting, "cad" (sex with as many partners as absolutely possible) vs "dad" (monogamy) male parenting and so many other INHERITED BEHAVIORAL TRAITS is simply part of Blacks' genome. All those traits, along with others enabled the ancestors of today's Blacks to thrive in equatorial Africa. Eurasians, evolving an a harsher, more northern clime evolved differently. Infants are not born a "tabula rasa". There are consistent behavioral traits observable in infants only hours or at most days old. A black infant can hold his/her head up before they are even a day old. Eurasian infants require 2 WEEKS or more to achieve that milestone. The age old question of "nature vs nurture" is nonsense. It is and always has been nature AND nurture. Genome is not destiny but without good (in Eurasian terms) parenting it may as well be. If we wish to have people of African descent living among us we must accept a certain degree of (what we Eurasians might otherwise consider) criminal behavior from them. It is their genomic heritage.

and

Welcome to the People's Democratic Republic of the United States of America. A nation without any god, utterly divided, with liberty and justice for no one! The Chauvin verdict was just the final nail in the lid of the coffin of the rule of law. Between the monstrous election fraud of last November, HR1 and the rush to expand and for-all-time pack the SCOTUS, I see ABSOLUTELY NO reason to vote again - EVER! Why bother?

The Coca Cola Company seems to be learning the hard way that signing up for the racialist agenda of the left has a downside.

The Post Office is spying on conservative Americans.
Once again, this site is a nexus for conspiracy theory and pseudoscience.
