White Smoke Writing Software

Post by woodragon » Fri Mar 25, 2011 3:38 am

Went to White Smoke's website and clicked on WOT to check ratings. Most of the reviews I saw were positive, so I downloaded the free trial. Immediately my security software blocked it as a high threat and removed the infection. I checked WOT again and @ second look most of the reviews were negative! So have I been duped by a switch tactic? If so, that's a real concern for both the user and WOT.

I guess depends on what you mean duped?

What security program are you using? Did you test the file in or url in virus total? Was it White Smokes corporate site you downloaded it from or possible an affiliate?

Bad reviews don't equal bad ratings as they do not have any weight on the numeric, or color coding, given to the site in the areas that WOT currently counts towards a websites safety.

"Reviews"?

@ woodragon,

Sounds like what you were referring to as "reviews" were comments. Comments ARE NOT ratings, as jeff134 said.

Indeed, you will find sites that have a scorecard with a lot of "red" comments but are rated green (look at FB as an example), and vice-versa (as you discovered with White Smoke).

Have a look at this: http://www.mywot.com/wiki/FAQ#Why_don.27t_comments_always_match_the_reputation.3F

Went to White Smoke's website and clicked on WOT to check ratings. Most of the reviews I saw were positive

I just went to Google, searched and results display orange WOT icons, clicking the symbol takes me directly to whitesmoke.com scorecard: http://www.mywot.com/scorecard/whitesmoke.com
It looks to me like the majority of comments are warnings of various categories...

Visited the site, downloaded the Trial and my AV warned me with: Adware/WhiteSmoke.T; source:
hxxp://get.whitesmoke.com/GeoInstaller/WhiteSmokeWriterGeo9221_en.exe - VirusTotal results
This file is only 98Kb, so we know it's an installer and will download more files from remote sources.

Next I downloaded:
http://get.whitesmoke.com/dl/tools/ddd.exe
which my AV popped up with a Malware warning: Trojan: TR/Drop.Agent.UC

If you search malc0de.com you'll find reference to many Malicious downloads.

I think there may be a problem with your security program otherwise how it could be possible that a writing software can stop the working of a security program.

These guys spammed me last year in Korean and English. They should be rated in the red, period.

WhiteSmoke is definitely NOT malware and saying otherwise is simply slander. If you have experienced problems with the software we will be glad to assist but please do not make false accusations.

AHAHAHAHAHA, your joking right?
If you sites so safe, why do you use such aggressive advertising techniques?
