I don't have Java, and I haven't had Java in a long time, nothing I use requires it. Does openoffice require it? Because I don't use it, so I wouldn't know.

Yes-

I agree that any software can be exploited. For example, Flash Player is commonly exploted software, but removing it would cripple web usage. Java on the other hand, is pretty much useless, for <strong> most </strong> people. So downloading it, may not be a wise choice. Unless you have uses for it, ...

Yes, that is the official site for JAVA. Unless you really need it, I would recommend not getting it.
Why? Because it is constantly being exploited by malware.
