I guess money talks after all. I don't like them for bundling additional software into 'free downloads' but as long as they have an opt-out button, it doesn't really matter. Ad-blocking software have hit these websites hard in recent years.

If I install certain ad-block add -on to my browser, does it mean I won't be able to spot the if my computer has any ad-malware (as the add-on will be blocking most of the non-intrusive ones anyway)?

I haven't used cnet to download any files for a good while now... all they care about is money, they would offer visitors the most useless piece of software (by stranding together their useless garbage with the software you intended to download).
