with mass rating you can

Post by woova » Fri Sep 26, 2008 12:39 pm

with mass rating you can rate up to 100 sites at once but there is now quantity before quality, so that a lot of rated sites are put from lists which may be (too) old or not really reviewed.

The accuracy of community

OTOH, malware sites for example may not be too old for sometime, just inactive, until they are being re-used again when the initial buzz about them has cooled a bit, or they have a new virus to spread.

Or they are sites linked to specific groups/"products" that may not yet be active. Such groups rarely have any innocent sites, so rating stuff in bulk IMHO doesn't really require in-depth review again here, as long as you are pulling the list of sites from some security company/researcher's site.

And IMHO old is not relevant: it's past of web pages, be they innocent victims or not. I do believe people deserve to know, for example if some webhost has been exploited in the past. It tells something about them and their practises :)

And woova, do you honestly believe I'd be rating here/warning people in my own way this actively (Platinum level), without such a tool at my disposal?

I do have things to do in real life too, instead of wasting hours every day submitting sites manually, one by one.

I can partially undersand this comment now. I have browsed around there a little, checking out categories for sites I know, and I have found several quite ridiculous category suggestions, such as these ones ^^

avast.com / "pornography" (lol? wut?)
tokyomango.com / "pornography"
p2pnet.net / "pornography"

These are clearly cases where whoever who submitted them didn't even bother to check sites.

That's a good example why these tools shouldn't be available to everyone. I think reaching the Gold level proves the user is responsible enough to be trusted with the mass rating tool. :)
