Do I have a bad reputation?

Post by Figure10 » Sun May 19, 2013 7:42 am

I don't mean to start drama, but for a while I've been getting a feeling that the community isn't very fond of me. I think it's because that, while I've rated many sites and used the MRT, I don't post on the forum very often. I believe that some people may have gotten the wrong impression from that. I understand being angry if you think that someone isn't being serious or is using WOT for the wrong reasons- after all, we see scammers every day and have no tolerance for them. I didn't make this thread to call anybody out or whine about the community, just to explain myself a little more.

I installed WOT, like most of you, I assume, originally did; as a way to check all the new sites I was visiting everyday for viruses, scams, and the like. I liked WOT so much I set it up on my parent's computers and recommended it to friends. As I learned more about the add-on and the thriving community I had 'installed' with it, I wanted to participate. I'd make a few posts here and there, but usually felt unhelpful and unneeded. I'm a very shy person and with my anxiety disorder I sometimes have trouble reaching out to people or getting involved in communities, even online. I've leaned a lot from just lurking on WOT about the internet, how scams operate, etc, and I've tried to use that.

My intentions have always been good- to protect people, including my parents and friends, from all kinds of malicious sites. I want to be involved, I want to learn, and I want to help. While I may never be as indispensable to WOT as other users, I at least hope to not be harmful.

I know that this post is probably silly, and maybe even useless, but I wanted to tell WOT that I mean well. Thank you.

Re: "...a feeling that the community isn't very fond of me."

It is not a community in a social sense, and so you shouldn't make the mistake of wanting to be liked on WOT. Just be an honest and reliable WOT member and your ratings and opinions will speak for themselves. If you consistently demonstrate your reliability and truthfulness then you will be respected even if you think that you are not particularly liked, and respect is worth far more than likeability around here.

No need to get paranoid - just be as honest and reliable as you possibly can be.

@ Figure10 =

I want you to know that you are appreciated and liked, and not just by me : - }

To my knowledge, I have written to you before, let it be for a good job or wish you, a happy holiday

I have been here for three years, and I have seen your hard work and I have never heard of a complain about you, as far as I am concerned you are part of the group that is constantly working to make the net safer

As for shyness and anxiety disorder, I want you to know that you are not the only one, and with time and treatment, it can be cured

It may take time, but let me reassure you, it can be cured and the fact that you wrote this thread, it shows that you have the courage, to take the steps to full recovery

As for WOT, I consider you an important member and my board is always open, in anything that I could be of help, pm me

Best wishes

Pentecost and a day off ! Finally some time to be active on WOT after weeks of hard work and travelling abroad.

Hey Figure 10

I stepped into WOT in summer 2009 and - like you did - in the beginning I wasn't really active, though WOT made me curious.
I've taken some months to read, learn, getting to know the members and habits.
And slowly I started to participate more and more.
Like you say, it's the same with me : There are members with more know how about computers and the www than me.
I'm not a programmer / ICT specialist or so. But I have other skills, like speaking several languages ( and using my common sense ).
Dutch way of saying : "Act normal, that's crazy enough"
If we all do our best ( within our experience ) and support eachother in fighting the internet scumbags, WOT will remain being succesful.

In the about four years I join WOT, I've seen many contributions in this forum from you that DO make sense.
So... to me you're a respected member and there's no need to feel "little" or being unwanted
And your post is more honest than silly

Respect,
Peter

I have joined this website today and this is my first posting and your first post I have read so far but let me tell you my friend just because you feel disadvantage in one way or another don't take it that you are disliked or anything, first of all your negative thoughts about yourself does a very big impact on your daily life. Try to eliminate those kind of thoughts and do what you because you feel it is good to be done but not to wanting to be liked or not.

@ Figure10 - I personally value your presence here, and I'm glad you have become more active on the Forum.

When I first joined WoT, posts and comments by you (and others) served as evidence of this community's virtues. Although I noticed your later absence from the Forum, I know that each person has to do what is possible and comfortable. Life has a persistent tendency to rearrange one's priorities.

By the way: nice avatar. And publicly stating that you suffer anxiety is, in my book, courageous and quite the opposite of shy.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
