Feds seize hefty Bitcoin haul during Silk Road smackdown
RE: Feds seize hefty Bitcoin haul during Silk Road smackdown
What got Silkroad taken down is the owner made some rookie mistakes- and then tried to put out a hit on someone and got caught. From there on out the authorities had him.

Ross William Ulbricht, Silk Road operator, convicted on 7 charges
Prosecutors argued drug dealing made up nearly all of Silk Road's sales
Lyn Ulbricht, his mother, exited the courtroom complaining that the defence had been barred from putting on evidence that would help her son.
"It was not a fair trial. It was not an even playing field, and I think that's a tragedy," she said.
Ulbricht faced no murder charges in New York, but still awaits trial in Baltimore in a murder-to-hire plot.
His sentencing in New York is scheduled for May 15, and some of the charges carry a maximum of life in prison.

He was arrested last year as the site was shut down by the FBI. Officials seized 173,991 Bitcoins ($150m) as part of the investigation.

It’s also interesting to note that Silk Road 2.0 was not the largest darknet marketplace at the time of its seizure. That honor is reserved for Evolution, and Agora is another marketplace that wasn’t too far behind Silk Road 2.0 in terms of vendors.

RE: Silk Road Creator Ross Ulbricht sentenced to life in prison
On Friday Ulbricht was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for his role in creating and running Silk Road’s billion-dollar, anonymous black market for drugs. Judge Katherine Forrest gave Ulbricht the most severe sentence possible, beyond what even the prosecution had explicitly requested. The minimum Ulbricht could have served was 20 years.
“The stated purpose [of the Silk Road] was to be beyond the law. In the world you created over time, democracy didn’t exist. You were captain of the ship, the Dread Pirate Roberts,” she told Ulbricht as she read the sentence, referring to his pseudonym as the Silk Road’s leader. “Silk Road’s birth and presence asserted that its…creator was better than the laws of this country. This is deeply troubling, terribly misguided, and very dangerous.”
In addition to his prison sentence, Ulbricht was also ordered to pay a massive restitution of more than $183 million, what the prosecution had estimated to be the total sales of illegal drugs and counterfeit IDs through the Silk Road—at a certain bitcoin exchange rate—over the course of its time online. Any revenue from the government sale of the bitcoins seized from the Silk Road server and Ulbricht’s laptop will be applied to that debt.

He deserves his life sentence given that he tried to clear all his digital footprints (knowing exactly what he did was against the law) and has made millions of dollars out of the dark web...
I heard 6 people (teenagers) died of overdose after purchasing drugs on his website...

BBC: two more large dark web "markets" shut down
Recently, dark web markets over twenty times larger than Silk Road have been seized, secretly monitored and taken offline.

(Source: http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-40670010 )AlphaBay and Hansa dark web markets shut down
20-July-2017
Two of the largest dark web marketplaces have been shut down following a "landmark" international law enforcement investigation.
The AlphaBay and Hansa sites had been associated with the trade in illicit items such as drugs, weapons, malware and stolen data.
...
A previous dark web marketplace, Silk Road, was shut down by the FBI in 2013 and a successor - Silk Road 2.0 - was deactivated the following year.
However, in its press release today the DoJ [USA Department of Justice] said that AlphaBay had more than 350,000 listings for illicit items of various kinds - Silk Road only had 14,000 when it was seized in 2013.
