Captcha

Post by MyWOT-Team » Thu Feb 04, 2016 8:08 am

Dear Community,

We've heard several member's frustration regarding Captcha and wanted to address this.

The requirement for Captcha is not related to trust or mistrust – it’s quite possible to hijack someone’s PC and start submitting ratings/reviews automatically on behalf of the trusted user. We have seen instances of Platinum level users infected by malware specifically crafted to manipulate ratings and comments.

To prevent attacks of this kind we require Captcha as a safety precaution.

If you encounter bugs with Captcha please post in our Support forum.

Thank you

On my 1920 X 1200 24 in screen all I see is lines 1 2 & 3. I do not see line 4 asking for CAPTCHA info. After pressing SAVE which is visible I get CAPTCHA error on top of page. After not filling CAPTCHA code you need to reset the code as the displayed code will not work.

I agree with Mandrake09 =
I have the highest respect for this member and many times I asked him to STAY, I know that you can make a safer, but more visible CaptchaPlease, give it a try:-)

We have very knowledgeable members willing to help

Thank you

I am willing to ask a dumb question (I have a full time job in IT supporting a good corporation), what the heck is "Captcha"? Thanks in advance.

A CAPTCHA (an acronym for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart") is a type of challenge-response test used in computing to determine whether or not the user is human
htxxtps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAPTCHA
As someone that I knew used to say, they are not dumb questions only dumb answers
I hope it helps :)
edit -
I dislike those acronyms from the 90s :/
The term was coined in 2003 by Luis von Ahn, Manuel Blum, Nicholas J. Hopper, and John Langford.
I still don't like them, even if it was millennial :-)

Not related to CAPTCHA, but the Save button is so close to the "Go back without saving your changes" button that when using a smartphone the comment will be deleted with no warning if the Save button isn't precisely reached.

Captcha from my experience is more often used at sites when not logged in, not after login. Perhaps there is some account warning, lockout, etc feature that WOT could implement after logged in if account compromise is detected, instead of Captcha.

Hopefully, you'll take a moment and update the Wiki concerning CAPTCHA, it's introduction was to simply aid in reducing scorecard comment spam.

We have seen instances of Platinum level users infected by malware specifically crafted to manipulate ratings and comments.
Curious why this malware has not been introduced for discussion in the Reputations forum (type of malware, malware source, etc.), hopefully users whom you suspect as being infected are informed.

Concerning the use of CAPTCHA with communication via:

Code: Select all

https://www.mywot.com/support/feedback/general
https://www.mywot.com/support/feedback/abuse
CAPTCHA
This question is for testing whether you are a human visitor and to prevent automated spam submissions.

Hopefully WOT does not allow automated (bot) registrations/logins.
Once logged in, I see no reason for a CAPTCHA test with feedback form submission.
I can understand the need IF a user has a problem with accessing their account and must manually enter their user name and email address to request support.

"most" of the time running into a captcha can be an unpleasant burden when joining a website..but if it must be done so be it.

Thank you for pointing this out. We will remove Captcha from the feedback forms and reduce its frequency in general usage so it becomes less of a bother. Given some exciting updates we're releasing soon, we ask for a little of everyone's patience with this fix.

Re:Wiki page, we will update it when everything's finalized.
