WOT Confusion

Post by OldNick » Mon Aug 02, 2010 1:20 am

I have a Sponsored Link on a google search, which lists as Ask.com, without the www. It gets red-lighted in all regards, and there are many many comments about it being spam, virus, porn etc. Yet when I click on the link, I do not get the WOT warning banner, and the site looks legit enough to me. There are ads, but these are listed links to sites. There are other sites that simply relate to my search.

It looks like a perfectly legit Ask result

WOT gives?

WOT popup

When you hover over the sponsored link the WOT pop-up is displayed.
Click it, then you will go to the domain that has intercepted the "sponsored link" which is a "click-through" for you from the sponsored link to the target site. This is 3rd-party intervention, WOT only blocks when you have Blocking set as opposed to Warn

Here's an example.
I used Google and typed in ask jeeves
The first sponsored link is "www.ask.com" with the red WOT symbol, so I clicked on the pop-up and the scorecard opened for: pixel1370.everesttech.net which is a subdomain of everesttech.net - my comment from October 2009

What happens when you click the sponsored link?
