subdomain question - "www."

Post by c۞g » Mon May 25, 2009 2:03 am

My web host asked me how I want my domain(s) to resolve and gave me a choice of:
with "www"
no "www"
both with and without "www" <= my selection

I notice that some domains require the subdomain "www." to reslove; an example
hxxp://www.tagged.com.edgesuite.net/ = web page.
hxxp://tagged.com.edgesuite.net/ = DNS error - no site found

WOT Scorecards treats
example.com
www.example.com
as the same thing
whereas
www2.example.com is different.

should WOT be treating parent (example.com) separate from child (www.example.com) as well?
at least for domains that do not resolve without the www. prefix or those rare cases where including "www." results with error.
maybe a simple ping test would suffice - if resolved, create/display scorecard if not, then display error: site not found and with mass rating, include sub2.sub1.domain to unable to rate, "error: site name list"

This would be especially helpful (required?) when both resolve but with different IP's:
www.example.com resolves to IP: 127.0.0.1
example.com resolves to 192.168.0.0

where one IP might be dedicated and the other located on a public / shared server.
the shared IP results with 403 error or a default server welcome page and
the dedicated IP loads the site.

I don't think so, no.

Well, you couldn't have two sites with the same domain (regardless of the prefix). So it doesn't really matter if WOT treats "www.example.com" as "example.com".

and when they each use different IP's?

Links open robtex.com = safe

This is not blacklisted
www.tagged.com = IP: 209.18.41.40

This IS blacklisted
tagged.com = IP: 67.221.174.30

To list a third possibility: What if someone use "www" as a fake subdomain..?

That doesn't really matter, because the owner of the domain also controls the www subdomain. Since the www subdomain is commonly used as an alias for the main website hosted on the domain, we believe they should also share the reputation.

Spam? Or just some gratuitous advertising?

Fake sub 1

By "fake subdomain" I mean a subdomain that pretends it isn't 'sub' but 'main'.
Like this: www.paypal.com.st.st/123456789/theusualmumbojumbo/...

ST is one of the rare domains that few know about.
Doubling ST just adds to the confusion...

Fake sub 2

Another example, how about this one: vvvvvv.example.com..?
Take a closer look at "vvvvvv"; it is actually "v v v v v v".
Thus it's a subdomain, but who'll find out..?

Err ....

Actually yes, you could. If you so wanted, domain.com and www.domain.com could be two entirely different sites (e.g. the homepage and support site). It's not very common for legit sites to do this, but not uncommon for malicious sites to do such.
