Thank you for your feedback

Hi everyone, My name is Or Offer and I am the CEO of SimilarGroup ( we operate
Firstly I would like to thank you for your important comments, I read them all and I think it is amazing to see how the community is involved in WOT. Your involvement is very important and we are taking your feedback and suggestions very seriously.
The idea behind the widget is to help users who are checking site reputations to see additional available alternatives that they may not be aware exist. In this way users are exposed to more valuable information and can make better informed decisions. Particularly, I believe that when users are interested in site reputations, viewing reputations of additional existing alternatives is very relevant.
About the technology, we are aware that for certain sites the results generated are not always of maximum similarity. The reason stems from the nature of our technology, which is a “machine learning”, implying that the results continuously improve. Moreover, usually, the bigger the site is the better the results generated, as for smaller sites it may take the technology some time to analyze and learn each website until it generates the best results.
We have dealt in this field for many years, and although we are not perfect, I can promise you that we are one of the most advanced in this field.
I would like to add that users’ votes really matter as we do take them into account and we can also recognize users that vote more accurately and give them more weight when calculating our similar sites lists. You are welcome to help us improve and can do it by using or our Addon SimilarWeb.
Should you have more questions or feedback you are welcome to email me at:
All the best

number of votes and other stuff

Post by ganmerlad » Sat Mar 06, 2010 2:29 pm

I would say the vote was pretty much a no-show in reality. 259 votes total out of how many (million) users? It appears to have been voted down by being ignored to death. (or are polls here usually that poorly taken up?) I didn't vote on it *because* I was new and wasn't entirely sure what was being proposed.

If this is to work at all, then the similar sites shown have to be WOT approved AND actually be similar in some way. The website they are using to pull up these comparable sites doesn't seem to be the best choice, despite the glowing reviews it evidently got from mozilla. The fact it only works well on high ranking sites makes it useless in general, because most sites out there are small time. The fact the search engine pulls up dangerous sites as similar, which is causing the WOT police to say "it is too dangerous for you to actually go to many of these sites" makes me wonder why WOT would use the service at all. Did anyone actually check out the site for its own WOT worthiness, or research by putting in a variety of sites to see what showed up in lists before they plugged it in?

I know, I am new here, I will shut up now.

First off, thank you for

First off, thank you for your input OrOffer however I have been on the interenet and computers for many year and do not recall seeing this service or your company untill I saw this feature being implemented. Perhaps this is ignorance on my part or maybe the fact that I regard the service as nothing more than another advertising company who spams people with what they feel or would like visitors to see and sites to go to whereby I shy away and block these types of service. I also question how these sites are chosen in presentation to customers as (being sceptical) it is easy to abuse a system and point people to sites that are favourable to a company.

When you say the machine is on a learning curve, so has the same been applied to Computer AI's and there is no end in sight! Will this be a long time before people start to see you similar sites actually being relevent to the site is is being referenced to as I feel this would be detremental to many users and have a negative impact on this feature.

From what you have said above, I also take it that this new feature is here to utilise WOT users by getting them to double their work by also reviewing sites you place in this bar, for your benefit. You could say it is getting free input from the WOT community rather than having to just rely on your own resources and userbase.

My 2 cents worth. for views and news of the starte of digital security. Add your comments/.feedback on your existing security software to help others choose what's right for them and what isn't. Read up on the latest rogue software and threats too.

those of us on broadband

Post by Jazspeak » Sat Mar 06, 2010 5:13 pm

Firstly, by ratings page I am referring to what you call the scorecard page.

As for being on dialup, I spent many years on dialup before the advent of broadband, and I can say that I used to have to plan my Internet time and not go for aimless browsing or opening unnecessary pages such as the WOT scorecard. However, it is a fact that most web sites, including WOT, these days are aimed at broadband users rather than dialup. The spread of broadband is increasing around the world and it won't be long before dialup is consigned to history.

Of course, the use of dialup is not the only limiting factor. There are probably still people using very old slow computers with very small available resources, such as pitiful amounts of RAM, but this doesn't mean that web sites, including WOT, should go at the pace of the slowest. It is in the nature of progress for the slowest to either catch up or be left behind.

I just checked and the language has been changed to:

"Check out reputation of alternative sites to..."

Thank you!

"by ratings page I am referring to what you call the scorecard page
WOT calls it "scorecard", so that's why . . . I . . . call it that. Helps the discussion if we all use the same terminology. Using different terms puts us on a slippery slope for misunderstandings (which is why I asked you what you meant).

"unnecessary pages such as the WOT scorecard"
Why do you think it's an "unnecessary" page?

"this doesn't mean that web sites, including WOT, should go at the pace of the slowest
So your marketing strategy would eliminate dial up users?

You still haven't answered my original question. Were you contradicting yourself? Or are you simply eliminating dial up users from the equation?

You have been at it for 6 or more years

Hate me for saying so, but I am not going to rate your search engine's bad choices. I don't care enough to do the work for free.

If you want to be a part of WOT the only way that you will be accepted is if you put WOT standards into your searches. Are you willing to?
